How To Send Your Resume To A Consultant

We know, what you are thinking. This does not need any detailing. Just send it. Email it, whatsapp it, wrap it around a brick and throw it into their glass offices. For the last option, we request that you don’t, it hurts, for Emailing and Whatsapping it, here are some suggestions.

Emailing

Scenario 1 - You are applying for a particular job that the consultant has posted.

Scenario 2 - You want to share your profile with the consultant for any opportunities that may come up.

Scenario 3 - You want to share your updated profile with the consultant. (you might have a new phone number, email, designation, company etc)

Scenario 1

When you are applying for a particular job that the consultant has posted, please do the following:

  • Read the requirement or the full post. While we understand with the advent of chatGPT and AI tools, all job posts sound pretty much the same, ignore this step at your own peril. From understanding the requirement, will come the next step.

  • Tailor your email. Personalise it. Make it so, that the consultant is forced to open your resume at least once. That is what your email needs to do. Here are some quick suggestions:

    • Start the email addressed to the person who posted the job or the person mentioned as the contact person for the job. Even if the email address is generic, careers@ourhotels.com etc, make sure you use a name if a human is mentioned. If not? Ah, search linkedin to find someone in HR in that company. Go to the company website and find someone. Make that effort.

    • Answer the question asked in the job post. All job posts are essentially questions. ‘Are you the one?’ is the simplest way to think of it. Answer that in your email. How can you do that? Read what all the consultant wants and make sure you tick a yes to each. Ideally you want to align your skills and experiences with the specific needs of the job.

    • The subject of the email should be clean and simple. Applying for <designation> or <job code> mentioned in the job post.

    • At the very end, let the consultant know what is the best time and mode of communication. Remember, these are busy people. So a simple line like ‘I am happy to connect between 11am - 12noon on Thursdays and Fridays’, can go a long way.

    • Don’t forget to attach your resume. Make sure the resume file is your name. This saves the consultant time, coz they will need to download that file, rename it and then upload it to their database.

Scenario 2

You want to share your profile with the consultant for any opportunities that may come up.

In this scenario, you are not applying for a particular job, but would want the consultant to keep you in the ‘active job seeker’ database. Most jobs are never advertised. They get closed with the ‘active job seeker’ database of consultants.

Our suggestions:

  • If possible write to someone specific. Visit the consultant’s linkedin profile and check out their activity or posts. If you find that in the past they have posted for positions you might want to apply for, reach out.

for e.g.

  • Mention important details, one detail on one line. This makes sure that your profile can be tagged accordingly in the consultant database.

Use this as a simple format, & put it in the body of the email.

Geographical Preferences:

for e.g. any specific city or country.

Best Time To Connect With Me:

  • Offer to get on a call to talk about your profile. Always offer to connect.

Scenario 3

You want to share your updated profile with the consultant.

Ideally, you should keep a track of all your job applications, whether to a company or a consultant. Use a simple google sheet or even a text based file, that capture who, where, when and for what, Candidate ID.

  • Who did you send it to? (Where is the organisation name)

  • When did you send it?

  • What did you send it for? (as a response to a particular job post or for database)

  • If the consultant has a central database - similar to a CRM - then your profile will have a unique ID. Most consultants will share this with you. If they do, please retain this information.

Email Subject : Updation Request For Profile ID <ID>, <Name>

Dear <name of the person you marked the original email to>,

Please find my updated profile attached. I wanted to share some changes:

  • change 1

  • change 2 etc.

& then you can use the format mentioned above.

Hope this helps.
